SOCIAL BENEFITS IN USING SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENTS
We are a proud member of the Global Shea Alliance. The GSA is a non-profit industry association with 390 members from 30 countries including women’s groups, brands and retailers, suppliers, and NGOs. Through public-private partnerships, the GSA promotes industry sustainability, quality practices and standards, and demand for Shea Butter in food and cosmetics.
The kernels of the Shea Tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) – which grow in an over three million square kilometer zone across the arid Sahel stretching from Senegal to Uganda, Sudan and Guinea Savannah eco-zones of West, East and Central Africa – are collected and processed into butter for use in cosmetics, confectionary and pharmaceuticals. The trees are not intensely cultivated but are managed traditionally in parklands across the region. They are a significant economic and cultural force today as they have been for a millennium.
The Shea industry is centered on women. Approximately 16 million rural women in Africa contribute to their livelihoods and support their family and children’s education by collecting, processing, and selling shea kernels and butter for local consumption or export. These activities can contribute on average 15 percent or more to their household income. Demand for Shea Butter produced in West Africa has increased by over 1200% over the last 10 years.
We use Shea Butter in many of our Natural Body-Care products. In one of our featured lines, our Pure Vegan Body Butters, we use pure Shea Butter imported from West Africa as a base and infuse other exotic nut and seed butters enhancing their respective benefits.
The range of Nut and Seed Butters we use include Shea, Babassu, Cacao, Cupuacu, Kokum, Mango, Tucuma, Shorea and Hemp Seed and all offer great similar benefits with varying degrees including naturally high levels of essential fatty acids, powerful anti-oxidant boosts, they help to renew the skin’s barrier function and they reduce moisture loss creating a soothing and emollient feeling. Pure Nut and Seed Butters are the greatest skin moisturizers. Unlike creams and lotions, which are up to 80% water in content, our Pure Vegan Body Butters are blended with no water added. Pure Nut Butters naturally melt upon skin contact and are readily absorbed into the skin.
The Nut and Seed Butters we feature in our Natural Body-Care products are harvested from trees and plants by the local tribes indigenous to regions of the world where economies are still developing. The struggling people of these areas are dependent for their livelihood on the harvesting of these important ingredients. We support fair trade practices as an organized movement helping to alleviate global poverty by providing fair wage jobs and environmental sustainability.
